Super dumb question but you just place the wax straight on the coils? And how do you know when to replace the coils?

Do the coils turn red or no because I put a little bit of wax in it and tried hitting it but nothing happend so idk what is wrong with the coil or no because like I said it wasn't working at all and I tried heating it up more but still nothing
